I learned to crochet from my grandma when I was about 8 years old. We’d spend hours together crocheting and chatting or watching movies. Hot chocolate was a must and laughs were always included.
I had a learning curve when I learned to crochet, because my grandma was right handed and I’m a leftie. I sat in front of her so we were face to face. I would copy her like a mirror image. It wasn’t easy, but I did eventually pick it up along with a love for the art.
My grandma passed several years later and I came to the unfortunate realization that I only knew how to crochet one type of stitch. I had made some beautiful blankets but wanted to do more in the world of crochet because it was something I enjoyed and also to continue my grandmother’s legacy.
I did not know where to begin in my quest to expand my knowledge and learned a lot through trial and error. I can’t tell you how many times I made something just to take it apart and start over. Eventually, I learned to read patterns and in time, I succeeded in furthering my knowledge a great deal.
I have a burning passion for crochet and now I get to share it with you! My mission is to make things easier for you than it was for me. I struggled quite a lot in the beginning when I wanted to learn more. I didn’t know anyone who truly knew crochet after my grandma passed and also, being left handed was a barrier because most tools to learn were for right handed individuals. Trying to read patterns was like trying to read Chinese so that didn’t help me initially either. Slowly, I did succeed, but it was challenging. Hopefully with my blog, you can have a wonderful learning experience. I have a lot of exciting stuff to share. Welcome to Crochet with Shay! If you would like to learn to crochet, you’re in the right place. Don’t worry if you’re right handed even though I am left handed because I have both right and left handed tutorials available.
The picture below is the stitch my grandmother taught me. This blanket is one that she made. In fact, this is the blanket she was working on when she taught me. So many wonderful memories are wrapped up in this blanket.
