Are you intrigued by what you can crochet? I know I am. Amigurumi in particular caught my attention due to the amazing things you can create. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of creating small stuffed yarn toys through crochet or knitting. I have seen so many creative things made with amigurumi such as stuffed animals, stuffed plants, stuffed food and more. There are options to make things that are micro sized all the way to jumbo sized. Whether you are a beginner or are already familiar with amigurumi, this is a fun, exciting list of items to crochet.
An important tip before we get to the fun part, creating our furry friends! If a pattern uses safety eyes or noses, they should not be given to a child under 3 due to choking hazard. There are fun alternatives that are safe however, such as embroidered eyes, crocheted eyes or felt eyes.

The Woobles Penguin Free Crochet Pattern

The Woobles is a well known crochet company that is a wonderful resource for beginner projects. If you have not created amigurumi previously, this pattern would be a good one to start with. I personally worked this pattern as one of my first amigurumi projects and I felt it was a good beginner project. It is important to note that as an absolute beginner to amigurumi, even if you are not new to crochet, it can be challenging at first just as anything new can be. The first time I did this penguin it did not come out right at all, even though I had been crocheting for years! I remade the penguin and it was just as cute as could be. Remember that it is okay to make mistakes, it’s how we learn. Most importantly remember to have fun! You simply cannot miss this adorable penguin. It’s a quick, easy and adorable project that is perfect to keep or gift!

This octopus is another great project that you could do as a first amigurumi project. The pattern is detailed with lots of pictures and there is also a video tutorial. Video tutorials are great especially when first starting. This adorable octopus can be customized by creating it in different colors and would look adorable on a shelf. It would also be the perfect toy to gift your child on their next birthday!

This whale pattern is another good option for a first project or for a beginner. There are lots of pictures to follow along and the pattern is very detailed. Different whale patterns seem to be trending right now which makes it the perfect choice for your next project. You could turn it into a keychain for a fun option.

The Mushroom Plushie is a great beginner project. I wouldn’t do this one as one of the very first projects you do though, because the bulky yarn like this makes your stitches harder to see. I recommend doing a couple other amigurumi projects before moving into the more bulky or fuzzy yarn. Once you are ready to proceed with this type of yarn however, this is a great pattern. I personally have done this pattern and gifted it to my teenage daughter who absolutely adored it. The instructions were easy to follow. There were some videos to follow as well. Overall, this pattern would be a good beginner project. The completed project is so cute and cuddly that my 5 year old is currently begging me to make one for her! This mushroom plushie would be fun to make with different colored mushroom tops. You could make a village of friends!

This is a great beginner project. I probably would recommend a smaller piece for your very first project but this is a great option once you have the basics down. These flamingos are so cute and the pattern is quite detailed with great pictures as well. I recommend patterns by “The Friendly Fox” because I have followed a couple of them and find them easy to follow with good end results. I have not followed this particular one yet but I plan to. A dear loved one, close to my heart, loved flamingos and I cannot wait to make this one myself! How adorable would this look on a shelf with her little legs hanging over the edge? Or in my case, my kids would probably confiscate it from me before I get to display it! Haha!
No Sew Crochet Turtle Amigurumi Plush

This turtle is another beginner friendly project. This is one on my list of things I want to make! I actually have a friend who got gifted one of these by a teenager learning amigurumi. Looking at the pattern, there are some really great pictures to go along with the pattern that is well written and easy to follow. Added bonus is no sewing! Look how cute and squishy! This turtle makes me want to go spend the day at the beach watching sparkling waves and sipping a cool drink with the sand between my toes.

This little pocket kitty is noted to be skill level of advanced beginner. There are a couple customization options noted in the pattern that give this cute puppy a whole new look! This cute dog just screams perfect toy to gift to a child. Even my teenage daughter would love this soft cuddly puppy. The recommended yarn is cotton Lily Sugar n’ Creme, which is soft and perfect for cuddling.

Zara the Zebra is noted to be a beginner friendly project. The pattern is well written with lots of pictures. There are links to helpful videos if you get stuck on certain pieces while creating your furry friend. This zebra is absolutely adorable and would be a great project to practice color changes. This zebra looks like the perfect addition to any amigurumi collection.

This pattern is noted to be easy. It has step by step instructions and also lots of good pictures to follow. These jellyfish aren’t only cute, they also have a functional purpose! They were created with the intention to dry hands, but they are so cute, they make good cuddle toys too. These jellyfish could be hung in a bathroom where they would serve as a dual purpose of being used to dry hands and also fitting into an under water theme. You could even try hanging them up in your office to add a bit of color and cheer.

The reversible face is reported to be a creative way of expressing emotion. This could be a great option for kids to express their emotions when it’s difficult for them. This octopus is made with soft yarn which makes this a cuddly friend that is also adorable!

The cute amigurumi owl is noted to be great for beginners. There are step by step instructions and video tutorials to assist you as well. These cute owls are a must have cuddle friend.
