What You’ll Need For Your Mini Granny Square Bookmark

Bright, colorful yarn for making mini granny squres

Before we get started, let’s gather everything you’ll need for this mini crochet adventure. Below I have linked the products that I use and like so you can get the needed materials for your mini granny square bookmark delivered straight to you!

Yarn: I used worsted weight Red Heart Yarn. You could use a different type of yarn but I would recommend staying with a worsted weight. If you prefer cotton yarn, I like Lily Sugar’n Cream. Pick some vibrant colors to make your mini granny squares pop.

Crochet Hook: I used a 5.5mm crochet hook, but feel free to adjust as needed. I like Clover Hooks. You can get a 5.5mm hook here or a set of crochet hooks here. If you don’t have a set of hooks, I recommend getting one because different projects require different sizes and it is cheaper to buy a set than it is to buy individual hooks that will add up to what you would get in a set.

Scissors: To cut your yarn. I like fabric scissors to give the yarn a nice clean cut.

Tapestry Needle: For weaving in the ends. I like these yarn needles here.

Once you’ve gathered everything, it’s time to start crocheting your very own mini granny square bookmark! Remember the most important part: Have fun!

Step 1: Crocheting Your Mini Granny Square

Handmade, crochet mini granny squares

The beauty of a granny square lies in its versatility, and this mini version is no different! There are so many things we can create with mini granny squares. The possibilities are endless! In this tutorial, we’re going to crochet a mini granny square to make sure it fits perfectly as a bookmark.

Make a Magic Ring: Begin by creating a magic ring.

Round 1: * hdc 3, ch 2 *

Repeat from * to * 3 more times for a total of 4 sets. You should end after your last ch 2  which will create the last corner of your mini granny square.

Pull the tail from your MR to close it.

When you have closed your MR, sl st to the first hdc.

Step 2: Putting the Mini Granny Squares Together

Now comes the fun part—joining your mini granny squares into a beautiful bookmark! I always love it when my project starts to come together.

Lay out your squares: First decide how you want to arrange your mini granny squares. It can be a lot of fun to move them around a bit and decide which arrangement is your favorite. Once you have decided how you want them to be put together, you are ready to join them.

There are a few different ways to join your mini granny squares, but for this pattern, we will use a single crochet. Put 2 squares together with the edges aligned. I find it easiest to stack them, one on top of the other. Put your hook through both squares and make a single crochet. Continue this method and sc across (5).

Once your first two mini granny squares are joined, continue joining the remaining squares in the same way. Take your time to ensure that the edges line up evenly. After joining all the squares, you’ll have a neat strip of mini granny squares connected together.

Next sc around the outside of your strip of mini granny squares, creating a border around them. Finish off and weave in ends with your yarn needle.

Optional: On the top of your bookmark, in the middle, ch st 18.

Step 3: Enjoy Your Mini Granny Square Bookmark!

This little project not only makes for a fantastic way to use up leftover yarn scraps, but it also adds a personal touch to your reading experience. You can also customize your bookmark with different colors, sizes, and even embellishments like beads or buttons for extra flair.

If you’re feeling generous, you can even make a few extra bookmarks and gift them to friends and family who love to read. What a thoughtful and handmade present!
